Raising Awareness for Oral Cancer

As a dentist, Dr. Sproll actively screens for oral cancer, contributing to patient education and rehabilitation during and after cancer treatment. Recognising the importance of early detection, Dr. Sproll advocates regular check-ups to identify potential issues promptly.

What does oral cancer look like? Early lesions can be painless, while late symptoms can be associated with pain, discomfort, and limitation in function. Keep an eye out for mixed red-white lesions, swelling, persistent ulcers, or masses in the mouth.

Who is likely to get oral cancer? Smoking and drinking alcohol remain significant risk factors. However, everyone, regardless of age, gender, or known risk factors, is in danger of developing oral cancer. Notably, oral cancer is increasing in younger age groups, especially among younger, Caucasian women, and a majority do not have the typical risk factors.

So, what can you do? It’s simple. Have your six-monthly check-up with your oral health professional. It’s not just decay that we are screening your mouth for but also signs of oral cancer. Regular check-ups play a crucial role in early detection, significantly improving survival rates.
