Could your child be eligible for FREEE dental care?
The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a scheme run by Medicare that provides eligible children with a rebate over 2 calendar years to pay for a range of dental services.
Dental services are capped at $1000 over 2 consecutive calendar years. The 2 year cap period starts when a child or teenager first gets an eligible dental service.
What is covered?
CDBS covers dental services including examinations, routine cleaning, repairing cracked teeth, fillings and root canals.
Covered dental services include:
- examinations
- X-rays
- cleaning
- fissure sealing
- fillings
- root canals
- extractions, and
- partial dentures
If your child is eligible for this scheme there is no out-of-pocket expense for the above-mentioned services.
Children’s Orthodontics
Generally speaking, orthodontic treatment starts between the ages of 8 to 12 years old, although it’s not uncommon for treatment to start slightly earlier or later.
So, what are some of the reasons your child may need braces? There are a number of factors, including your child’s oral and physical development.
Here are some signs that orthodontics might be an effective treatment for your child.
- Early, late, or irregular loss of baby teeth
- Difficulty in chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb or finger sucking
- Tongue thrusting
- Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
- Jaws that shift, make sounds, protrude, or are misaligned
- Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
- Teeth that meet abnormally or not at all
- Jaws and teeth that are out of proportion to the rest of the face
If you notice any of these problems, your child does not have to wait until the age mentioned to see their dentist. In fact, Dr Andrew Sproll, an expert in Children’s dentistry and general practice orthodontics recommends a child see a dentist by age one or by the time the first tooth comes through. This is a very important time to start the child’s long-term relationship with their dentist and dental practice.
